Three handed watches
A new dimension
Even the famous Greek astronomer Ptolemy made his calculations using the base
of sixty, previously used by the ancient Babylonians. The terminology made its
way later into Latin and has been handed down to us in the form of our modern
hours and seconds. However, the minute hand of a clock did not appear until the
17th century. It was an innovation that totally changed the clock?s appearance.
Time was no longer represented as a specific point but was given by the angle
between two moving hands. Nowadays this is taken entirely for granted.
